Let me introduce you to Yolanda Shivers...

Oh, Yolanda... She caught my attention a while ago with her work ethic and amazingly positive attitude. I noticed that she was dedicated to volunteering at Skybreak Church and was at just about every meeting, event, etc. When I got to know her, I found that she not only gives great hugs but is a joy to spend time with. She loves to have fun and laugh but also knows where to focus her attention. She recently put herself (and graduated, yay!) through nursing school while hardly missing a beat at church AND being a mother. Her life is a testament to God’s goodness and I’m glad to know her.
Q: How long have you been at Skybreak Church?

I had not attended church in years (and when I say years I mean 7-8 years) and felt like church was not for me and thought, “Why do I need to give the church my money for tithes and offerings?” It just didn't make sense to me at all. About 6 years ago, I was invited to Skybreak church several times by someone I knew. Even though I really didn't want to go, I finally accepted the invite just so he would stop asking me to attend. All I can say is I'm so glad I did accepted the invite. I started attending Skybreak occasionally but was doing just that "attending". I kept hearing Pastor Danny talk about these "small groups" and how important it was the be a part of a small group. A short time later a small group series called Life Is... by Judah Smith was launched. I was eager to join a small group to see what Pastor Danny had been talking about. I have to admit, Pastor Danny was absolutely right, it was a game changer for me. I was surrounded by a group of people that had a love for God and were grounded on his word. I knew who God was and that he died on the cross for me, but I didn't know God. I didn't have that personal relationship with Him that I needed. Being surrounded by them gave me a better understanding of God's love and the sacrifices He made for me. I even had a better understanding and appreciation for tithing (which I do faithfully now). It was at that time I knew I wanted to do more then just attend church, I wanted to be a part of Skybreak church and serve in the house of the Lord. I went through and completed growth track and was super excited to start my new journey within Skybreak as an usher. I had no idea that God had another path for me and about 1 year after joining the usher team I was asked to be one of the captains of the usher team, which I graciously accepted. I have met some of the most wonderful people while attending Skybreak and have formed tons of life time bonus family members. I truly could not imaging being anywhere else. I love my church!
So awesome, Yolanda! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t shed a few tears reading her story. I love my church family, too! I wouldn’t know the beautiful, diverse, group of people that I call my family if it weren’t for small groups and volunteering and attending Skybreak Church.
How many of you can say, like Yolanda, that you’re thankful for your church, as well? Bob Goff says that sometimes when you’re looking for an answer to prayer, he gives you a friend. I believe that if we set all of our false, preconceived ideas of church aside, you’ll find a friend there. The best way to find a friend is simply to show yourself friendly. When you come to church tomorrow, don’t come in just expecting to receive. That will happen of course, but be sure to make an effort to give kindness, peace and grace to others. Jesus came to be the greatest friend of all so that we could know how to be that to those that need us.
Go be a friend. You may just find a family.
Love you, friend!
